I don't think we will be able to remotely install to a Linux computer anytime soon, but we will look more into it to see what might be possible.

That would be great seeing that Linux is widely used and VNC Manger 4.0 should support it but I understand that it would difficult but it would be worth the investment and profit down the way.

The problem is that it might be technologically impossible to do this. I am looking and I have yet to find a tool that can do this.

Well you don't have to support every OS just the major ones... Red Hat, Mandrake and one more..

Never heared about such OSes before.. they are Linux distros not OSes..

Anyway, the bottom line is that remote deployment is going to be supported form Windows based OSes only. I probably know how one can install VNC remotely on remote Linux box, with the help of SSH server...who knows may be it will be added in the VNC Manager v10.0

Oh well... I hope that everything goes well and someone is able to make a script that can be used so that I can have a linux box right behind me and control it with my windows computer with VNC manager... It would be great... Please seriously look at it after 3.0 is released.

Install VNC client for Linux.  On your management node:

  • Download from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc.
  • Install in /usr/local/bin.
  • For each node update nodehm.tab and set vnc for the gcons method.
  • For each node update vnc.tab and set the display as 0 and the password file as /root/.vnc/passwd.

vnc.tab should be formatted like this:

    node1    0,/root/.vnc/passwd
    node2    0,/root/.vnc/passwd

    etc...

  • Setup VNC password, type: vncpasswd, when prompted enter the same password you entered in the VNC service setup window for Windows NT/2000.
  • Test, type:

    gcons nodename

Connecting

Each time you want to connect using VNC, complete the following:
Use ssh to forward a local port to the VNC server. The following would work for Grace Hopper:
ssh -L 5901:localhost:5995 grhopper@vnc.cs.vassar.edu
Start the VNC client:
vncviewer -encodings "tight hextile" :1
When you finish your Unix session, log out of Unix as you normally would, quit vncviewer, and exit from your ssh session.

After you finnish up with 3.5 I would look at this and seeing what VISTA has to offer with RM desktop... Probbly the same but I would look at supporting VNC for Linux, & Apple becuase that is really the only market you haven't hit..
