I work in IT at a casino. We have about 200 computers on our network and connect to most of them. However, when connecting to a select few, the screen just sits on Connecting to computername:5900. Are there some things I can check? I tried using IP address to eliminate DNS as the issue. Is it possible that antivirus would be causing issues? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I would check on the following two possible causes:- When the server uses DSM plug-in and the client (viewer) doesn't a connection could get stuck; just like you are seeing. So check whether or not these VNC servers use DSM plug-in.
- Some older UltraVNC server versions could crash upon establishing connection. This also was resulting in stuck connection screen.

We are using TightVNC at the moment. I guess I don't know of any pros or cons to a specific version.

The major con of TightVNC is that the project appers to be dead. Vista has been released 2 years ago and they still haven't released a new version with UAC (security prompts) support.

Ok... I'm still having this issue, but I do have a question. I noticed that at least one of the computers that we can't connect to is still on Windows XP SP2. We have SP3 on nearly every machine. Is there any known issue where this SP difference would cause problems?

Nope, it doesn't matter what SP the computer has installed. Just to make sure that the problem is not in the VNC Manager's VNC viewer, can you please try to establish connection using native VNC viewer. Most probably it will get stuck as well. If it does, that the problem is on the server side.
