I'm currently running VNC Mgr v5.0.3.0.
Currrently, the flavor of VNC installed on a PC is displayed in the VNC Mgr console under the VNC distribution column, such as RealVNC or UltraVNC. It would much more useful if the this would include the specific version of VNC as well; for example UtraVNC v1.0.5.6. This would help keep track of systems that either have been updated or need a new version of VNC.

Hi Bob,
technically this could be done. But there is one problem, the update process will be painfully slow. To fetch installed VNC distro version, we would have to establish WMI connection to a remote computer and scan its registry for known VNC distros version. So my rough guess that in case of LAN computers this could easily take 10 to 20 seconds per computer.There is another issue of logon credentials. In case of the current scan, it simply establishes TCP connection to a VNC server, reads the handshake string and disconnects. But in cause of VNC distro query, the VNC Manager will have to authenticate against with computer being scanned, etc. So this will require some careful designing. One way I see this could be done, is the scanner could use logon credentials assigned to a registered computer. If it fails to authenticate, it could use default credentials specified in the Tools->Options->Management Tools. If these credentials wouldn't work also, then the VNC Manager would give up on this computer and skip it (the reason is because the scan is supposed to run in the background and do not prompt the end user to enter correct logon credentials). What do you think?

I would not want to constantly bog down the update process.
Would it be practical to configure the update process to have an option check box to scan the distro only at a particular time of day when the longer update would not be an issue, such as lunch time? Once a day or every couple of days would be more than adequate. It could even be a setting that would only last for one update and automatically reset to unchecked.
Another option might be to make it a utility such as the other wizards and built-in utilities you provide. You would only run it as needed. Call it VNC Version Checker.

Yep this sounds most reasonable. Let us finishing implementing new Hyper-V Virtual Machines thumbnails view feature and then we will what we can do about "VNC Version Checker".

I've good news for you - we have implemented auto detecting of VNC software installed. This new feature scans a remote computer installed software database and detects exact version of VNC installed. This will be included in the v5.0.4.0 Beta build.Regitered computer properties

Thanks for the update.
I've been reviewing your post and I've got some questions about the utility.
1. Is the bottom graphic titled "Detect Installed VNC Software window" a configuration screen where you tell the utility which installed distribution type to search for?
2. Does this utility work the same as the Deployment Wizard does? First you select the workstations you wish to scan from the main screen and then invoke the version checking utility?
3. Once you have scanned the selected workstations, how are the results handled? Does a list pop up that you can print out but once you close the utlity the information is gone or does the utlity itself maintain the version information? Does the version information get incorporated into the Main Screen display of workstations?

This is a window that allows to scan for installed VNC distributions on a multiple computers.
2. Does this utility work the same as the Deployment Wizard does? First you select the workstations you wish to scan from the main screen and then invoke the version checking utility?
The feature is available in two forms:
1) In form of the Detect Installed VNC Distribution window (can work with multiple computers)
2) As part of Registered Computer properties sheet (works with single computer only)
3. Once you have scanned the selected workstations, how are the results handled? Does a list pop up that you can print out but once you close the utlity the information is gone or does the utlity itself maintain the version information? Does the version information get incorporated into the Main Screen display of workstations?
The scan results stored in corresponding registered computers. And the information about discovered VNC distributions can be displayed in the main list.

I just installed v5.0.4 and tried the Detect VNC Distribution utility and had a problem.
I get an error when the utility loads saying ...
Could not find file 'C:\Program Files\SmartCode Solutions\VNC Manager (Enterprise Edition)\vncdistributions'.
Not sure why my installation doesn't have this folder. I tried creating that folder and putting the distribution files in it but then I get another error ...
Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\SmartCode Solutions\VNC Manager (Enterprise Edition)\vncdistributions' is denied.
Please advise.
