I am currently on VNC Mgr Enterprise v4.5.3.0 but I have been experiencing this problem for the last 3-4 releases.

Sometimes when launching a VNC connection from "My Registered Computers", the tab for the PC will appear but then nothing else happens. If I wait for maybe 15-30 seconds and then click on the tab, "Not responding" will appear on the title bar and I then have to "End Task" on VNC Mgr. I can then re-launch VNC Mgr. and generally I can then access the PC that I tried to access and locked up VNC Mgr previously.

When I check the Event Log I see the not too helpful Event ID 1002 ...

Hanging application VNCManager.exe, version 4.5.3.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Another thing that regularly locks up VNC Mgr (say 3 out of 10 times) is doing a shutdown on a PC that you are accessing via VNC. When this happens, it requires an "End Task" to proceed. The other 7 times, the tab will close and everything works as it should.

We use UltraVNC v1.0.5 installed from the UltraVNC installer.

Not sure why my original post was ignored...

Here's an update.

I'm now running VNC Mgr v4.5.8.2 and deployed UVNC v1.0.5.3 on remote PCs.

If anything, the problem is worse now. Quite often, I will connect to a remote PC using UVNC and within 30 secs or so the remote system will stop updating on my screen. If I disconnect and try to reconnect, that will freeze VNC Mgr and I'll have to kill it and restart it. The other alternative when UVNC stops responding is to quit and resort to RDP, which connects pretty reliably but I prefer a working UVNC session.

I've noticed a few other postings to the forum reporting similar problems. What's the status on this?

Bob,
the post wasn't ignored. We are aware about reports about this issue and trying to repoduce it, but we yet have to get such hang. It seems like the issue could be easily reprduced on some computer configurations but not other. For instance, here we tried to reproduce it on at least hlf a dosen different computers with zero result

I'm still having problems with freeze-ups. And they happen both with UVNC servers that are on my own LAN as well as a group of them that I connect to regularly across a VPN.

Since there is a new version of UVNC (v1.0.5.6) available from UltraVNC.org, I've installed that on a couple of workstations on the other end of the VPN that were locking up constantly. They both had the S-Code v1.0.5.3 installed. It's made a big difference in both the speed and stability of the UVNC session. So far, I have not experienced a lockup with either of those workstations.

One thing that I've started playing around with on those workstations is the mirror driver. Both systems are WinXP Pro Dells, one with 2.66 MHz Core 2 Quad and 3 GB memory and the other with a 2.33 MHz Core 2 Duo and 1 GB memory. If I understand the mirror driver, it should reduce the UVNC load on the processor to speed things up. Since these are relatively powerful PCs, they wouldn't get that much of a performance boost and that does seem to be the case.

Has anyone else tried the v1.0.5.6 version to address lockups? If so, what was your experience?

I too am experiencing frequent hangs. I am thinking its actually the VNC client end that is causing the issue. Have you tried redeploying a different version to the problem machines? How baout removing the hook driver and video driver hook options?

At this point we are pretty much certain about what is going on the client side:

1) The hang occurs only if you have a tab with VNC viewer opened
2) You reboot/shutdown remote computer or use the Logoff command
3) This is the most interesting part. It looks like at this step VNC viewer may show a message box window. But VNC Manager has already hidden the VNC viewer window. So basically you have got an invisible modal window, which is blocking access to the main VNC Manager window. And that's why the application appears to be hanging, when in fact it just blocked by the hidden modal message box window.

The most ridiculous part is that we haven't been able to reproduce the hang. And believe it or not, we really have been trying hard to reproduce the bug.

Now we are looking for a customer, who can reproduce the problem on his computer and to whom we could send debug VNC Manager build with .PDB files so he could run the application under a debugger. And when the application hangs he could tell us exactly in what part of code the hang occurs.

To Bob: unfortunately we are looking for a person who knows how to use Visual Studio or WinDbg since this task is kinda complicated for a person who never used debug tools before. But THANK YOU for your help anyway!

Thanks for the update.

I just wanted to add that the client version seems to be the issue as well. When this problem became evident, I had almost 100% of our PCs setup with the v1.0.5.3 (repackaged by SmartCode) that I had pushed out from VNC Manager.

Maybe 30 - 40% of the PCs I connect to have lockup issues. I've been regularly uninstalling the v1.0.5.3 version from these PCs and manually installing the UltraVNC v1.0.5.6 version (including the mirror driver) and that seems to cure the hang problem. It has also made a dramatic difference in performance for the PCs I connect to across our VPN.

I was doing some searching at the UVNC.org forums and looking under the v1.0.5.3 section that's closed off, there was a reference to locking up.

I'm getting more and more the idea that we need to disable auto
or find the cause for the bad behavior. But the whole thing is unrepeatable on my LAN or WiFi home network.

Sure sounds like the problem we're discussing. Apparently there are problems with "Auto" being able to properly adjust to the conditions present when the connection is launched.

If you want to read the whole thread, the subject line is "Ultravnc 1.05.3 freezing"

Just for your information, within next couple days we will be releasing v5.0.2.0 Beta, which will include UltraVNC 1.0.5.6 deployment package.
