Hi Smartcode,

I've been using the new 4.0.7.0b version for a fortnight now, so far so good, except for two problems, one I believe is major, one very annoying!

Point 1 in the bug list is the most important! As more and more widescreens are going out into the field, I need to have the scaling option!

BUGS

1.) Since upgrading to the new version, whenever I choose to scale the host's screen in either Aspect or Free Fill, the performance is drastically effected (mouse jitters across the screen, screen scrape is very slow). As soon as I disable scaling the problem immediately goes away. I've tried this on many machines, all of which have the same problem, 7.0.4.0 did not have this problem!

2.) UVNC file copy has been improved whereby you can now click on a folder and transfer it, however a UVNC file copy session seems to complete hang the entire VNC Manager console. CPU and Memory using is not a problem, is barely goes over 30% on both, no more than if there is no file copy session running. Because of this I'm still forced to use an independent uVNC viewer session to copy files.

WISHLIST

1.) I would love to have the ability to create custom tools panel, for example a one click 'VNC Deployment Wizard' button, to save the need to right click...
2.) Screen scaling only if the host screen is larger than the viewer's screen.
3.) MAC address resolution to machine outside the local subnet.

Thanks Smartcode, keep up the good work!

Graeme Lucas

Graeme Lucas

Hi Smartcode,

I've seemed to have found another bug in 7.0.4.0b RC2, a strange one I've never found in older versions.

Several times now when I've been VNC'd onto a host, which I'm installing software onto (The software is irrelevant to the problem but it seems to be all apps using the Windows Installer, so 99% of it!).

The problem is if I've got my mouse on the VNC Session and have the installer windows as the active window, there's no problem, as soon as I for example click out of VNC Manager on my computer (ie make VNC Manager loose it's focus), the windows installer stops, both on my computer and on the host! So it's not just the scrape that stops, the installer on the host pauses as well, as soon as I click back onto the VNC Manager app, then click on the installer windows in the VNC Session it resumes!

Strange one? If I disconnect the session the installer continues with no problem, but as soon as I'm connecting again and taking focus from VNC Manager, it stops!

I've replicated this problem on several different machine of different age and specs, as well as on several computers running VNC Manager 4.0.7.0b RC2!

HELP! This is frustrating, and I've never had these problems in older versions! I now have to keep disconnecting the session to I can do other work while the installer runs!

Graeme Lucas

Graeme,
just to clarify...you establish a VNC connection, run an MSI based installer on remote computer, and when, on your client computer, you switch focus a window other than the VNC Manager the installer freezes?

If that's the case I can assure you that this has nothing to do with the VNC Manager. Actually I've seen similar problem on my local computer, no VNC or VNC Manager involved, as well as when I was using native RDP client. I had to hover mouse cursor over the installer window in order to unfreeze MSI installation which appeared to be stuck.

I see your point, but it only happens in 4.0.7.0b!

Using an older version does not cause this problem?

Also can I bump the other points! No follow up for a while!

Thanks

The follow-up..here it goes

1.) I would love to have the ability to create custom tools panel, for example a one click 'VNC Deployment Wizard' button, to save the need to right click...

This is something that will be implemented for sure, along with ability to assign custom keyboard shortcuts.

2.) Screen scaling only if the host screen is larger than the viewer's screen.

Not sure about this one...it might be nice to have, but screen scalling command already has 3 states (off, scretch, aspect) and adding another option might be just too much.

3.) MAC address resolution to machine outside the local subnet.

and the MAC scanning. just to make it clear that only fast enough option to query MAC addresses during network scan is the ARP query method currently used by the VNC Manager, period. But it only works for local subnet.
There re two other methods that could be implemented, but again none of these two could be used in along with network scan.
1) query MAC using WMI interface. This sure will work with any computer and this query is method is going to be implemented in one of the upcoming builds.
2) nbtstat.exe uses MAC query method, which in some cases might be able to query MAC of a computer on another subnet. This method might get implemented, but only when we finish implementing WMI query method 1)

I forgot about one major problem with querying MAC address via WMI. With current ARP query method, even if the remote computer has more than one Ethernet adapter installed you always get MAC of Ethernet adapter that's is used to connect to the network.  In case of WMI, you connect to a remote computer, enumerate all the Ethernet adapters and now we have to decide, which one to pick?! In case of one computer it's not a problem, you can always open a dialog window and ask the user to choose the correct one. But what if you are querying MAC on hundreds of computers?! At the moment, I’m not sure how this situation should be handled.

Bump points one and two of my original post! These are by far the most important!
