After using VNC Enterprise Manager v3.5.20 to deploy UltraVNC 1.02, even after rebooting, the WinVNC icon will not load in the taskbar.  We have checked our registry settings several times, sent them to Tech Support for verification, done complete clean uninstalls (including registry values) and reinstalls with no luck.  The only way to make the icon appear is to place a shortcut of the "Run Service Helper" into each machines Startup folder.  Yes, it can be automated with a script in about 3 seconds, but we would prefer to have it fixed, rather than apply a "band-aid."

Each user account has local admin rights to their machine.

All machines are running XP SP2.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Not trying to speak for s-code, but the short answer is it probably can't be fixed without hacking the vnc code. For some reason the icon in the task tray is a difficult item, thus the reason they have service helper. What the deployment packages do is install vnc as a service. It is up to VNC itself to take care of the tray icon. This is something that needs to be fixed in VNC, but I'm not sure if anyone is motivated enough to take care of it. Your best bet is to put the service helper in the startup folder.

It may be nice to build an option in the deployment wizard to automatically add service helper to the HKLM run key.

The case with the UltraVNC tray icon is more or less clear now. Last week we found out what causes the tray icon not to appear. It actually caused by a bug in the UltraVNC code. TightVNC that also uses -servicehelper switch doesn't have such bug.

The bug is actually a really nasty one and currently we are considering either to workaround it in the Deployment Wizard or to fix the UltraVNC source code and deploy fixed version of UltraVNC server.

Currently there seems to be a workaround to this problem. If during the deployment there is a user logged on to the target computer locally, then the tray icon will appear. It could be that the user logged on to the computer must be the same user whose credentials are used for the remote deployment, but I'm not sure about that one.
