SSH Tunnel / Open VPN

Hi,

I have been using the UltraVNC Repeater with great success, I've been using SSH tunneling with varying success (mostly due to incompatibility with OpenSSH and Server 2003 R2.

I was wondering it using OpenVPN would be a reliable and easy to implement solution with similar functionality (or increased) to SSH Tunneling.

Specifically, with most of my remote connections, I cannot run any of the Computer Management, Login detection tools successfully.

new to VNCM - 3 issues

All,

I'm testing out VNC Manager for the school I am the IT admin for, and I'm having 3 issues I can't seem to work around:

1. The Show Logged in Users problem in the 4.x Beta: on a PC NOT connected to my domain, no matter what credentials I put in (VNC password, Windows admin credentials for target server computer, Windows admin credentials for the domain, etc.), I get the "not permitted" or similar (I'm not at that machine - sorry) error I've seen discussed in other posts. So - what credentials should I be using for to show logged in users? (this feature worked fine under 3.x, by they way).

2. On the same PC, running Vista, the thumbnails look like they have a redraw issue (lines running through them), whenever the monitored PCs are at the login screen. I don't have this problem running VNC Manager on an XP Pro PC. Is this a known issue with Vista? Any workarounds?

3. On the XP Pro PC, I can only show up to 19 thumbnails (at any quality setting). If I try to add more thumbnails, several always say "disconnected", and, much more importantly, I can't VNC-connect to any of them (the tab opens and closes with no error). I suspect this is a memory issue, since this doesn't happen on the Vista PC with 1GB of ram. Is this an issue anyone else has seen?

Failed to Find MAC

"Failed to find MAC address. Check that server address is correct and the server's firewall allows ARP requests to pass"

Receive this error when trying to update a mac address within the properties screen across a VPN WAN connection. The system is XP sp2. This function works on the local LAN but not WAN. I spoke with our Managed VPN provider and they do not filter anything going across. Any ideas to look for to solve this issue. This also causes us to not be able to use wake on lan functionality to the remote pc's.

Activate Openvpn connection prior to VNC Connection

Under VNC client settings I have created a script with the following command (openvpn-gui --connect office.ovpn).
The intention is to connect the VPN prior to connecting with VNC.
The command activates and the openvpn connection is made correctly, normally the openvpn gui would close and then the VNC connection should be made.
However at this stage it locks up with the openvpn-gui status window open. No response from Smartcode Manager.
I can only crtl-alt-del and kill the smartcode application.

Any help would be appreciated.

VNC Deployment Wizard: How to troubleshoot Access Denied error.

If you are receiving an Access Denied error while running the VNC Deployment Wizard and

you are sure that you entered a valid administrative logon credentials
and in case if you are deploying to a Windows XP based computer, that the simplified file sharing is turned off

Then you should check that Allow Distributed COM setting is enabled on the computer you are trying to deploy to (it's enabled by default but some software might turn it off).

To do so you should open Component Services snap-in. Start->Administrative Tools->Component Services.
When snap-in is running in the left tree navigate to: Console Root->Component Services->Computers->My Computer and select Properties command.
(you must run the snap-in on the computer you are trying to deploy to. Or you can also connect to the computer remotely by running New->Computer context menu command available for the Console Root->Component Services->Computers tree node.)

Remote Deployment issue

I am trying to deploy the VNC server piece remotely on my network, but I'm running into a problem. Every machine I've tried it with errors out the same way. I am using the administrator account, so I know I have the privileges, and I know I have access to the ADMIN$ share on all of these machines. Here is the log that I get from the failed attempts:

Any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated. It actually worked on another domain controller, which leads me to believe that it's not a GPO or firewall setting that is blocking the procedure.

Problem using deployment wizard with Windows 2k3 server

i am using Beta1 VNC manager and i am having difficulties deploying VNC to my windows 2k3 servers.

I have installed the WMI Windows installer Provider , i checked the dcom settings according to the access denied sticky posting.

But i still get an return code 3 error:

Indexing search by host name NOT IP address

Hello again,

I have a querie relating to Dynamic Search Folders with VNC Manage 4.0.1.0b.

Our network utilizes DHCP on all of our subnets, when for whatever reason a computer changes IP address, Dynamic Search Folders treats it as a NEW computer, instead of just realising the change and updating the existing one.

Is there a way of fixing this? I've tried playing with the global search options but no luck.

It is important that VNC Manager finds the IP address as our user will either quote their host name or IP address, so we need to see both.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IP Address changing

I have set up Groups and registered new computers by typing in their IP Address, then during the setup I find their MAC address. The problem is that when the computer's IP Address changes I lose the ability to pull the computer up. Is there a way for Manager to find the computer's IP Address using the MAC address?

Error when connecting to RDP Server

I'm running Smartcode VNC Manager Enterprise v. 3.6.24.0.
I've tried to uninstall and reinstall VNC Manager, with no effect.

Whenever I try to connect to a RDP Server, I get the error:
SmartCode VNC Manager has failed to open RDP viewer.

In the details pane it says:
The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

What can I do to get RDP connections to work again?

How to Uninstall ALL of VNC Manager

Trying to uninstall VNC Manger, the latest release, we have run the uninstalled through the control panels add-remove programs, searched the registry, and entire c drive for all references to vnc or smartcode and removed all instances. When we reinstall the program, it still brings up all previous settings that we had before. What other files should we be looking for to remove before reinstalling the program to get a totally fresh install of it. Thanks.

Unable to connect using UltraVNC + DSM plugin

Thumbnails Using RDP?

Trying to use the thumbnails feature, but my machines are all using RDP. Does it not work with RDP? I just get a "disconnected" icon...

Also, if VNC is required, do I need to install a special client on the machines to start using it, or do I just use that "deploy vnc" tool that comes with the app? Haven't used VNC before, RDP has always got the job done for me, but I really want this thumbnail feature so I am willing to try it if it gets me the thumbs :D

3. i run a listening viewer, and some clients, who their incoming connections are disabled, connect to my listening viewer. then, i want to group them together, view them as thumbnails and execute scripts on the group but their incoming connections are disabled and the thumbnails, for some reason, cant use the connection that already achieved and tries to connect again. how can i use the same connection but group them and view them as thumbnails ?

Cannot open VNC Viewer (HELP!)

I get the following error when I try to connect to any VNC server from SmartCode:

SmartCode VNC Manager has failed to open VNC viewer.

I have a problem using SSH tunneling using RDP or VNC

1 - I make a connection RDP - VNC with local Server address (ej: 192.168.1.1) of remote computer

2 - I mark Use SSH Tunneling and put ssh server address(ej:200.125.43.32), port, username and password

3 - When i put connect via RDP or VNC, message:

"SSH Port Forwarding connection has been closed

An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host"

Msiexec problem

Hi,

I've a Batch file (under Windows 2000 Professional) that I need to deploy.

If I execute this Batch file manually on a client computer, everything is OK.
If I try to execute it from my computer to the remote client, the Batch file encounters problems...

One of the jobs of this Batch file is to install an application with the MSIEXEC (Microsoft Windows Installer). When I execute the Batch file from my computer (VNC) to the remote client (The one I've tested the Batch on), the operation fails and terminates at the step to use the MSIEXEC.

No error is shown, but the Batch file is no more executed and the progress bar is complete.
Could someone help me, please ?

Small troubles with %userprofile% and %appdata% environment variables

Hi, this is me :D !

I've a little strange problem using %userprofile% and %appdata% environment variable in a Batch script (.bat). The script is local, and must be executed on a remote computer :

This script is necessary to cpy shortcuts (.lnk) in he Starting folder of Windows and in the task bar (led by Internet Explorer, from %appdata%).

The script works well if I execute it on my local computer.
The script works well if I copy it manually on the remote computer (running from my desk to the remote computer wuith a USB disk :P), and returns me the following :

But if I use smartCode to execute the script on the rmote computer, I get :

Uploading .lnk files as ressources ?

Hi,

It appears that if I upload a .lnk file (a win32 link to an application), the .lnk file isn't uploaded. Instead, VNC Manager uploads the application file (.exe) targetted by the .lnk file.

Is it possible to upload the .lnk file instead of the application file ?

How do I configure, in SmartVNC, the behavior of the remote PC when disconnects?

When I disconnect, my remote PC "logoff" the current user, which is undesirable. I want to be able to set "lock the workstation" (among other logical choices), if possible.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

RealVNC-VNC Manager VNC Viewer Error

Hi;

I am having a problem with configuring VNC Manager 3.6.16.2 with RealVNC 4.2.8.

I recieve a "No Configured Security Type Supported On 3.3 Viewer" error when I try the 'Connect to VNC Server' Option.

I have no issues connecting VNC Manager 3.6.16.2 to the W2K server using RDP from an XP Pro workstation.

I have no issues connecting to the W2K server (RealVNC 4.2.8 server) using the Real VNC 4.2.8 viewer on an XP Pro workstation.

I have tried a number of configuration options under 'Properties - VNC Client Settings' without luck.

Enviroment:

Windows 2000 Server SP4 with Terminal Service (Administrative) RDP installed, RealVNC 4.2.8 server, VNC Manager 3.6.16.2.

Windows XP Pro SP 2 with VNC Manager 3.6.16.2, RealVNC 4.2.8 server, and RealVNC Client 4.2.8 installed.

Would appriciate any help...

Switching from RDP to VNC Problem

I've just recently started to use RDP through VNC Manager, generally when VNC has failed to connect for one reason or another. However, when I try to connect to the same machine later trying to use VNC, I get the error message

Connection Closed. The VNC server has reported an emtpy desktop size.

If I reboot the remote PC that I was trying to connect to, I'm able to connect with VNC again.

I searched the VNC and UltraVNC forums and didn't find any mention of this so I'm thinking this is some kind of configuration problem on my part.

Remove Wallpaper

I'm currently testing VNC Manager and I've found that if I use VNC to initially log onto a Windows computer, the wallpaper is not disabled. However, if I disconnect and reconnect the wallpaper is removed. Is there any way to fix this?

Do you prefer Office 2007 Ribbon or old fashioned toolbars/menubars?

I am evaluating VNC Manager and have run into a few issues that I cannot tell if these are a limitation of the trail software:

1. Active directory is grayed out everywhere, import, search, etc.

2. I had noticed a forum post saying ACL deployments are possible in 3.5, but I have only seen an IP address allow/deny and not one for domain groups. Am I missing something?

3. Comparison chart shows 'Show "Who is Logged On" to remote PC' as one of the features of 3.5 enterprise. Does this display who is logged into windows or VNC, as all the entries for this column are empty?

4. If a new version of UltraVNC comes out, i.e. security fix, are users able to replace the deployment package of whichever vnc package they are using, or does this require an update to VNC Manager?

5. After going to tools, options, defaults, vnc session, edit default settings and changing something, hitting the apply to all servers button does not apply changes to any servers

Great product, one of the best I've seen, so any help or answers would be appreciated.

Migrating settings between installations

How do I migrate settings between multiple installations of VNC Manager. I have several engineers and hundreds of customers managed by VNC Manager. I can't setup hundreds of server registrations at each station... I'm sure there is a way, I just can't find it. I'll keep looking until I get a response to my post.

With this latest release, I can't individually change how I want my defaults for double clicking.
I used to be able to just right click, choose properties, and change my default for that server from either VNC to RDP
now it's greyed out and it wants me to apply through inheritance
the only problem is that requires me to change my entire container
I have a container of Servers and I'd like to be able to keep that container a mishmash of VNC and RDP conns. I don't want to have to create one for VNC Servers and one for RDP Servers.
Is there any way to disable this inheritance and just do it like I used to?

Netsupport via VNC Manager

Hi, thought I'd post here first as searched and no-one seems to have posted regarding this subject.

I know I can add an external tool for Netsupport ("C:\Program Files\NetSupport Manager\PCICTLUI.EXE"//C">10.0.0.1<TCP>" /E /VC)

But is there a way of bringing up Netsupport for the individual clients?

Or is this one for the features bit?

Performing actions using domain administrator credentials

Is there any way you can perform actions in SmartCode VNC Manager (such as connecting to a remote computer management console, etc.) using different credentials than you are currently logged in with (on a domain)?

My account does not have domain admin rights per our IT setup, but we have access to the domain administrator account and it would be nice to not have to log off my account and back on as the domain administrator every time I wanted to use SmartCode VNC Manager. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
